After several years of discussion the European Union and the United States plan to begin negotiations at the beginning of this summer on setting up a free trade agreement (FTA). The discussions will involve whether the tariffs on vehicles and parts should be lowered immediately or, as with the EU-South Korea FTA, gradually lowered over a number of years to allow the domestic industries to adapt to the influx of foreign brands. The aim, regardless of which, is zero tariffs.
