Trucking companies with self-insured health plans can avoid the rigged marketplace

October 23, 2020

The trucking industry has been hit hard by COVID-19. The pandemic-fueled economic crisis put nearly 93,000 truckers out of work between February and April. Less than half of those jobs have since come back.

By contrast, companies that sell health insurance to trucking firms are doing rather well. UnitedHealth Group, the country’s largest insurer, just announced that its profits doubled to $6.6 billion in the second quarter of this year. Anthem, which runs Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans in more than a dozen states, saw its net income more than double over the same period to $2.3 billion.
